Chiller Head Weight Calculator

Estimate steel plate, round cover, or chiller-head weight before planning a lift
Measurement guide showing length, width, thickness, diameter, and circumference for chiller head weight calculations

Round Plate / Chiller Head

Use measured depth/thickness. Domed heads, nozzles, flanges, and hardware can change actual weight.

Formulas Used

Rectangular Weight = Length × Width × Thickness × Density
Round Weight = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)2 × Thickness × Density

Field use: This calculator estimates solid steel weight from measured dimensions. It is useful for getting a quick planning number before moving a plate, cover, or chiller head.

Steel density: The default value is 0.283 lb/in³, commonly used for carbon steel. That equals roughly 40.8 lb per square foot for every 1 inch of thickness.

Important: Actual chiller heads may not be perfect flat plates. They may include domed surfaces, nozzles, flanges, pass dividers, studs, gasket surfaces, corrosion, water, or attached hardware.

Field reminder: This gives an estimated steel weight only. Add rigging hardware, lifting attachments, water, insulation, studs, brackets, and any other attached parts before planning the lift. Verify actual weight when the lift depends on the number.
